Siouxland CARES Greater Sioux City Metro Area Youth Survey Results
|

This report describes the conduct and findings of a survey of students in the Sioux City Community School District, Sioux City Catholic Schools, Sergeant Bluff-Luton School District, South Sioux City (NE), Dakota Valley School District (SD), Woodbury Central School District, River Valley School District and Lawton-Bronson School District. Siouxland CARES about Substance Abuse and the Data Collection Committee of Comprehensive Strategy developed this survey, with results compiled by Western Hills Area Education Agency.
NOTE: In 2002, a few of the questions were dropped and several new questions were added to include student usage “in the past thirty days”. NOTE: In 2003, Dakota Valley School District and the 6th and 8th graders in the SC Catholic Schools did not participate.
The Survey Instrument
This Youth Survey was developed in 1999 and administered in classrooms by teachers and administration in late spring of 1999 and again in the spring of 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. This survey assesses the ease/difficulty in obtaining alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; students’ self-reported use; age of onset of use; and, perception of harm of using these substances.
The Survey Sample
1999: Students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 were asked to complete the survey. Results reported include the responses from 30% of the students. The number who completed the demographic information in 1999 was a total of 1,658 students, including 427 sixth graders, 444 eighth graders, 465 tenth graders, 315 twelfth graders, and 7 for whom no grade was known. Of these students, 845 were female, 788 were male, and 25 for whom no gender was known. Of the total, 1311 were Euro American, 48 African American, 131 Latino/Hispanic, 48 Asian American, 43 Native American, 45 Other, and 32 for whom no ethnicity was known. This survey was taken by four school districts: Sioux Community School District, Sioux City Catholic Schools, Sergeant Bluff-Luton School District, and South Sioux City School District (NE).
2000: Students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 were asked to complete the survey. The number who completed the demographic information was a total of 4,511 students, including 1,400 sixth graders, 1,276 eighth graders, 1,097 tenth graders, 630 twelfth graders, and 108 for whom no grade was known. Of these students, 2,113 were female, 2,063 were male, and 335 for whom no gender was known. Of the total, 3,361 were Euro American, 136 African American, 318 Latino/Hispanic, 136 Asian American, 101 Native American, 92 Other and 367 for whom no ethnicity was known.
2001: Students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 were asked to complete the survey. The number who completed the demographic information was a total of 4,640 students, including 1,368 sixth graders, 1,242 eighth graders, 1,232 tenth graders, 757 twelfth graders, and 41 for whom no grade was known. Of these students, 2,150 were female, 2,297 were male, and 193 for whom no gender was known. Of the total, 3,526 were Euro American, 121 African American, 393 Latino/Hispanic, 165 Asian American, 114 Native American, 105 Other and 216 for whom no ethnicity was known.
2002: Students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 were asked to complete the survey. The number who completed the demographic information was a total of 4,681 students, including 1,395 sixth graders, 1,287 eighth graders, 1,138 tenth graders, 810 twelfth graders, and 51 for whom no grade was known. Of these students, 2,215 were female, 2,462 were male, and 4 for whom no gender was known. Of the total, 3,641 were Euro American, 111 African American, 516 Latino/Hispanic, 178 Asian American, 113 Native American, 121 Other and 1 for whom no ethnicity was known.
2003: Students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 were asked to complete the survey. The number who completed the demographic information was a total of 4,151 students, including 1,276 sixth graders, 1,138 eighth graders, 1,080 tenth graders, and 657 twelfth graders. Of these students, 2,071 were male and 2,038 were female, and 42 for whom no gender was known. Of the total, 2,920 were Euro American, 161 African American, 549 Latino/Hispanic, 142 Asian American, 109 Native American, 164 Other and 466 for whom no ethnicity was known.
2004: Students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 were asked to complete the survey. The number who completed the demographic information was a total of 5,025 students, including 1,376 sixth graders, 1,412 eighth graders, 1,115 tenth graders, and 992 twelfth graders. Of these students, 2,578 were male and 2,433 were female, and 14 for whom no gender was known. Of the total, 3,764 were Euro American, 160 African American, 661 Latino/Hispanic, 191 Asian American, 117 Native American, 129 Other and 3 for whom no ethnicity was known.
2005: Students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 were asked to complete the survey. The number who completed the demographic information was a total of 4,631 students, including 1,288 sixth graders, 1,335 eighth graders, 1,209 tenth graders, and 716 twelfth graders and 83 for whom no grade is known. Of these students, 2,172 were male and 2,164 were female, and 295 for whom no gender was known. Of the total, 3,133 were Euro American, 177 African American, 663 Latino/Hispanic, 117 Asian American, 115 Native American, 103 Other and 323 for whom no ethnicity was known.
2006 Students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 were asked to complete the survey. The number who completed the demographic information was a total of 4,614 students, including 1,321 sixth graders, 1,252 eighth graders, 1,210 tenth graders, and 831 twelfth graders. Of these students, 2,144 were male and 2,282 were female, and 188 for whom no gender was known. Of the total, 3,008 were Euro American, 158 African American, 815 Latino/Hispanic, 156 Asian American, 99 Native American, 134 Other and 244 for whom no ethnicity was known.
2007 Students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 were asked to complete the survey. The number who completed the demographic information was a total of 4,252 students, including 1,157 sixth graders, 1,164 eighth graders, 1,144 tenth graders, and 742 twelfth graders and 45 for whom no grade is known. Of these students, 2,099 were male and 2,132 were female, and 21 for whom no gender was known. Of the total, 2,846 were Euro American, 183 African American, 809 Latino/Hispanic, 125 Asian American, 118 Native American, 151 Other and 20 for whom no ethnicity was known.
NOTE: In some instances, the respondent gave a response that did not coincide with the given answers, thus counts may not add up to the total.
